The police in Troy, Mich., said they were investigating a shooting in a hospital parking lot on Thursday that appeared to be an isolated incident between two hospital employees. The shooter was taken into custody after a search, they said.

One victim was being treated in the emergency department, the hospital, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, said in an emailed statement. The police said that the shooter, a man, had fired a handgun five times at the victim, a 25-year-old man, who was in stable condition after being hit two times in the arm.

Both the shooter and the injured person were employees of the hospital, Lt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department told reporters at a news conference, calling it a “targeted incident.”

The police did not give further details about the gunman and the victim. Local television stations said the shooter was taken into custody from a house in Macomb Township.

The shooting took place just after 7 a.m., the police said. The hospital was placed on lockdown and patients with scheduled procedures were told to stay away.

Local news stations reported that law enforcement authorities searched the hospital campus, about 23 miles north of Detroit. They said schools in Troy were not on lockdown.
