Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Tuesday announced the acquisition of artificial intelligence (AI) software startup Nod.AI, in an effort to boost its open-source AI products and systems.

Advanced Micro Devices purchased the Santa Clara, California-based AI software expert for an undisclosed sum. Nod.ai technology will be applied to the chipmaker’s products for its Instinct data-center accelerators, Ryzen processors, and Radeon GPUs, AMD said.

With the purchase, AMD is attempting to capitalize on the demand for generative AI technologies. Nod.ai’s tools will give its customers developer tools, libraries, and machine learning models, the company said.

“The acquisition of Nod.ai is expected to significantly enhance our ability to provide AI customers with open software that allows them to easily deploy highly performant AI models tuned for AMD hardware,” AMD Senior Vice President of AI, Vamsi Boppana, said.

Nod.AI was founded in 2013 and received backing from investors including 8Square Capital, Atlantic Bridge, Pointguard Ventures, and Walden International. Nod.AI’s technologies have been used by enterprises and startups, and the AMD acquisition will allow its offerings to be used by a larger, global client base.

AMD shares were up 1.7% at 1:40 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday. The company’s third-quarter earnings are expected to be released on Nov. 7.
