(BPRW) METRO ATLANTA TO SHINE RED FOR WORLD SICKLE CELL AWARENESS DAY — JUNE 19, 2025

(Black PR Wire) Atlanta, GA — The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. (SCFG) invites the public to join us once again in observance of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on Thursday, June 19, 2025. As part of this global initiative, many iconic buildings and signature landscapes across Atlanta will light up RED at dusk to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

This powerful display of solidarity is part of an international effort to shed light on a disease that affects millions of people around the world.  More than 16,000 Georgians are living with SCD, the fourth highest patient population in the nation.

This exciting occasion is also an opportunity to shine a light on our Executive Director, Tabatha McGee, as she marks her tenth anniversary working at the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc., and her third year at the helm. McGee has overseen the opening of the new Sickle Cell Sanctuary Wellness Center – the first and only holistic center in the nation for sickle cell patients –  secured groundbreaking grants from the state of Georgia and the federal government, and realized one of her greatest successes, creating the McGee Legacy Studios. It is the setting for her inaugural production: Unveiling Sickle Cell: Beyond the Pain, an engaging first-of-its-kind talk show that educates viewers about sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell Disease is a chronic, inherited blood disorder that can lead to severe pain, organ damage, stroke, and even premature death. While it primarily affects individuals of African descent, it also impacts those of Hispanic heritage and certain Eastern European populations. One in 13 African Americans and approximately one in 100 Hispanic Americans carry the sickle cell trait.

Tragically, it’s estimated that only 1 in 4 Americans living with SCD receives the comprehensive care they need. But with increased awareness, advocacy, and community support, we move closer every day to finding a cure and ending the sickle cell cycle.

Join the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia and several Metro Atlanta landmarks in honoring all those living with SCD and in celebrating the progress toward improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure. To date, the following locations have agreed to Shine a Light on Sickle Cell by lighting their building in red:

  • Symphony Tower /1180 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport / The outdoor canopy at the North and South airport terminals, College Park, GA
  • King and Queen Buildings / 2 Concourse Pkwy, Sandy Springs, GA
  • 1105 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA
  • Georgia International Plaza, 1 State Farm Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA
