Several loud explosions have been heard in Iran’s capital Tehran and the nearby city of Karaj, Iranian media said, adding that the cause was unknown.
Iran’s state TV said several strong explosions were heard around the capital, but there was no official comment about the source of the explosions.
Sources in the west of Tehran have told SBS News that they have heard at least five explosions.
Fars news agency has reported their journalists have found “several military bases in the west and southwest of Tehran” were targeted by Israeli attacks.
Israel has been planning a response to , Tehran’s second direct attack on Israel in six months.
The Israeli military said early on Saturday it was conducting “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran in response to what it called “the continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against Israel”.
Tasnim news agency, a semi-official news agency in Iran associated with , has reported that “despite the sound of several explosions being heard by people in Tehran, nothing has been reported about hearing the sound of rockets or airplanes in the sky of Tehran so far”.
“Some sources report that air defence systems have also fired shots, and the sound of the defence systems has been heard as well,” Tasnim reported.
It also said that “some reports suggest that the situation” in Tehran’s main airports is “normal”.
Ali Ahmadnia, head of information affairs of the Iranian government, posted on X asking to “be careful of the media game” of Israel.
In April, that came after Iran launched a barrage of more than 300 drones and missiles in its first-ever direct assault on Israel’s soil.
Iran’s Fars news agency at the time reported there were “three explosions” near an army airbase, while a spokesperson for the country’s space agency said several drones had been shot down, adding there were no reports of a missile attack.
That incident came after Iran blamed Israel for an attack airstrike on its embassy in Damascus, Syria, which killed two of its generals and five military advisers.
Israel did not claim responsibility for the attack.
