Gaza ceasefire deal ‘closer’ than it’s ever been, officials say

The terms of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza and release the Israeli hostages taken during the October 7 attacks is being finalised, according to reports.
Mediators in Doha — where the negotiations are being held — gave both parties a final draft deal to look over on Monday, following what was described as a midnight “breakthrough” in meetings attended by the envoys of US President Joe Biden, and President-elect Donald Trump, an official familiar with the matter told Reuters.

“The next 24 hours will be pivotal to reaching the deal,” the source added.

Qatar’s prime minister and the chiefs of Israel’s Mossad and Shin Bet spy agencies were present for the discussions.
Senior White House officials have previously hinted that a deal is close, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan saying a truce and hostage deal could be done “this week”, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken telling MSNBC that all sides involved were “closer than we’ve ever been” to an agreement.
A Israeli official said negotiations are in advanced stages for the release of up to 33 hostages as part of the ceasefire deal.
“We are not sure if it is hours or days or more,” the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said about the timing of a potential deal.
