Tendulkar’s announcement comes as India experiences a spike in Covid-19 instances.
On Friday, India’s Ministry of Health reported 59,118 new coronavirus instances — the nation’s most in a single day since final 12 months.
Many of the instances are in Maharashtra state, which reported greater than 36,900 new infections and 112 associated deaths Friday. Officials have introduced an evening curfew beginning Sunday.
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics — which has been finishing up genome sequencing and evaluation of coronavirus strains since December — says 771 instances of variants of concern have now been detected in India. Most of the instances are the coronavirus variant first recognized within the UK, in line with an announcement from the Indian Ministry of Health on Wednesday.
While the ministry has not correlated these to the current rise in instances, the variants have been primarily detected in states reminiscent of Punjab and Maharashtra — referred to as states of “grave concern,” on condition that they’re contributing to many of the nation’s case load.
Guleria mentioned the emergence of the extra infectious UK variant in some states could also be one of many components contributing to the current surge in case numbers.
