Multiple children among injured in deadly shooting at Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade

At least 21 people were injured, among them several children, and one person was killed in a shooting on Thursday at a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, police said.
Kansas City police said three armed people were taken into custody following the shooting at Union Station, just metres from where Chiefs players had addressed cheering supporters moments earlier.
“We had eight what we considered immediately life-threatening patients, we had seven with life-threatening injuries, and had six that had minor injuries,” Kansas City fire department chief Ross Grundyson told a press conference. A third person was also detained after the attack, officials said.
Earlier, a spokeswoman for Children’s Mercy hospital told AFP that it was treating at least 12 people — 11 of them children, nine for gunshot wounds.

“Anyone nearby needs to leave the area as quickly as possible to facilitate treatment of the shooting victims,” local police said on X, formerly Twitter.

Terrified fans scrambled to flee the scene as police worked to clear Union Station in an ugly end to what had been a joyous Chiefs victory parade.

Earlier, hundreds of thousands of red-clad fans had greeted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his teammates as they made their way along a three-kilometre route on a procession of double-decker buses, enveloped by a blizzard of red and gold confetti.

Local media had cited local officials as saying more than a million people were expected for the parade, which was held in unseasonably sunny, warm conditions in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

The Chiefs were celebrating their third NFL Super Bowl title in five seasons after beating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in Las Vegas on Sunday.
