CHOCTAW, Okla. — Four people were shot and a police officer fired a weapon Friday night amid a high school football game in Oklahoma, authorities said.
Police received a report that an unknown number of individuals fired shots at the game at around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said early Saturday. Players and officials ran off the field, while others lay down on the field and in the stands.
Authorities also reported that an off-duty Del City police officer fired at least one shot during the exchange.
What to know about the victims of the shooting
The victims were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds. One was treated for a wound to her thigh before being released, but Marshall did not immediately know the conditions of the three remaining victims, the Associated Press reported.
Other than the shooting victims, Marshall said one person was treated for a possible broken leg.
At least one of those shot was a student, but the ages of the victims and whether any of the others were students was not known at the outset of the investigation, Marshall said.
Police received a description of a male suspect who left the scene but the person was not in custody Friday evening, Marshall said.
Officials investigating shooting
The number of possible shooters was unknown, but there were reports of two muzzle flashes seen during the shooting, Marshall said.
“I hate that it happened. We both have great students. We both have great cities that we work for and protect,” she said.
Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools Superintendent David Reid and Mid-Del Schools Superintendent Rick Cobb released a joint statement following the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by tonight’s incident,” the statement reads. “Both districts are working jointly with the police presence from Choctaw, Del City and Oklahoma County in an ongoing investigation. The police will provide further details as they become available.”
