One sweltering D.C. day 39-some years ago, 12 elderly ladies walked over from their nursing home to see Harry Belafonte at a nearby bookstore on Wisconsin Avenue. There was quite a line, and the sun was bearing down. My son, a high school volunteer who brought the group, realized the ladies were beginning to fade in the heat. He wasn’t the only one who noticed.
