Warren is the largest city in Macob, the third largest city in Michigan, and the biggest bedroom community of Metro Detroit. In only ten years, its population more than doubled, from almost 43,000 in 1950 to almost 90,000 in 1960. It doubled again in the next decade. People who lived in Detroit were escaping the crime, pollution and unrest in the city, and buying homes in what they considered as the more peaceful, pleasant and safer suburbs. The trend was called white flight, and Warren profited from it. Warren, however, was not as lucky with the retail industry. Shopping malls built in the city to compete with Detroit’s own malls went through short and repeated periods of boom and bust.
Things to Do
Plan on spending at least half a day at the Warren Parks and Recreation Department. It is where you can swim, enjoy a picnic, and play baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. If you are a senior, you can join day trips, attend special events, and play bridge and board games at the Stillwell Manor, a Senior Citizen Activity Center. People who love nature can visit at least one of the city’s 25 parks. In winter, you can enjoy ice skating at the City Square Ice Rink from November to March. By March, make sure to visit the City Square and its dancing fountains.
Best Hotel Accommodations
The Red Roof Inn Detroit Warren is pretty typical of the national chain. It has clean, affordable, noise-free rooms, is situated in a convenient location, and provides good service. Management and staff are quick to spot problem points and make adjustments so you can have a good stay. Such initiative wins them added brownie points. Guests of Courtyard by Marriott Detroit Warren are greeted by a lovely flowering garden. It is nicely decorated, clean and furnished with comfortable beds. It is not a luxury hotel but you will enjoy their pool, breakfast menu, friendly staff, gym and amenities. The Comfort Inn has introduced some well-received innovations such as a free hot meal in the evening twice a week. It may need a little updating but the basics are all there and you will be satisfied that you made a good choice of lodgings. Book your Warren City Hotels with Reservations.com.

Restaurants and Dining
There is nothing as authentic as Thai food cooked by the Thai, preferably by sprightly and grinning grandmothers, in their own kitchens and to their own taste. This is honest, simple, home-cooked meals packed in containers and sold on tables for the benefit of the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center on Sundays. Weather permitting, the Thai food fair is held twice a week. The food is so cheap, and you can hardly believe that a whole large fish prepared and fried the Thai way is only $7. You can also bring home crisp mussel pancakes, turmeric yellow pork satay, green papaya salad, peanut-coconut rice balls and fat duck breast. For Armenian food, Alexander’s is the place to go, serving baby grape leaves with pita bread and garlic dip. The chef chats with diners which gives just the right personal touch to the evening.
