Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced a recall of 91,787 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) of 2022 to 2026 model years in the US.
The recall is prompted by a software error found within the hybrid control processor (HCP) of the affected vehicles.
According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 1% of these vehicles are estimated to have the defect.
The issue stems from a potential overloading of the battery pack control module (BPCM) microprocessor, which could result in a reset of the BPCM.
The report by the auto regulator stated that, during certain resets, the HCP may misinterpret a signal from the BPCM, leading to potential problems.
The time frame for the production of the suspect vehicles began on 23 July 2021, with the introduction of the problematic HCP software, and concluded in August 2025.
The determination of the suspect period was made using engineering and vehicle assembly plant records.
The defect in question could pose a significant safety risk, as an unexpected loss of propulsion could result in a vehicle crash without warning.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US first received a preliminary information request from the NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations on 1 May 2025.
Subsequent communications and an investigation into the loss of propulsion complaints in some Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEVs took place between June and August 2025.
By 18 August 2025, FCA US had identified 96 customer assistance records, 320 service records, and 110 field reports, potentially related to this issue.
However, FCA US said that the company has no knowledge of any accidents or injuries that may be connected to this issue across all markets.
Following a review by the Vehicle Regulations Committee, FCA US concluded on 28 August 2025, that a safety-related defect might exist in all affected vehicles.
The planned remedy for the recall is set to be communicated to owners between 23-24 October 2025.
This recall comes on the heels of another recent Stellantis recall involving 219,577 vehicles across the US, which was related to a defect in the rear-view camera system.
