US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has died aged 84.
The Jackson family released a statement saying he “died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family”.
“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shake a global movement for freedom and dignity,” the statement said.
Jackson was raised in the segregated American south and became a close associate of Martin Luther King. He twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination.
