(BPRW) Black PR Wire Recognizes National Blood Donor Month
(Black PR Wire) January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to highlight the critical need for blood donations and honor the lifesaving impact of blood donors. Holiday celebrations, inclement weather, and cold and flu season often lead to fewer donations during the winter months, increasing the risk of blood shortages.
Blood donations are essential for many people, but are especially critical for individuals living with sickle cell disease. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) more than 100,000 people in the United States have sickle cell disease, with over 90% of cases occurring among individuals who are Black or African American. NHLBI also reports that one in three African American blood donors is a match for people living with sickle cell disease. So, when people of the Black community donate blood, it helps ensure a more diverse and representative blood supply that can better meet the needs of family, and friends.
