Two children have been rescued from a cable car hundreds of feet above the ground as officials work to save the remaining four children and two adults trapped in the car for more than six hours in Pakistan Tuesday.
The people on board the cable car were crossing a river canyon in Battagram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when one of the cables snapped, The Associated Press reported.
The occupants are about 1,150 feet above ground, Taimoor Khan, a spokesman for the disaster management authority, said.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister, ordered a helicopter team to try to rescue the people on board but Tipu Sultan, a retired army brigadier and defense expert, warned the wind created by the chopper can weaken the cables holding the car.
People across the country watched on TV as army commandos on a helicopter lowered themselves on ropes toward the cable car, AP reported.
“Let us pray that those trapped in the cable car are safely rescued,” Sultan said.

Villagers often use cable cars to get to places around Pakistan’s mountainous regions, including schools, government offices and businesses. Every year people are killed or are injured while traveling on cable cars because they are often poorly maintained.
In 2017, 10 people died after a cable car fell hundreds of feet into a ravine in the mountain resort of Murree.
